Glassy eyelashes & glassy hair, what is it?

At some point you have probably heard from a customer saying that their eyelashes have come loose relatively quickly. You attach new ones and the same thing happens again. Or that the eyelash simply doesn't want to stick to the natural lash, however much you try. In that case the customer may have so-called glassy eyelashes. The lashes have a smoother surface and almost none of the usual cuticular scales, making it harder for the false eyelash to stick. But there is a way to make them stick better.

This is what hair looks like under a microscope. If you have glassy eyelashes and hair, the scales and structure seen in the picture are missing. The glue adheres to uneven surfaces, so if the eyelash lacks scales, the surface is too smooth and the false eyelash with glue will have a harder time sticking.

If you prepare a mixture of baking soda and water and gently swab it onto the natural eyelashes before attaching the false ones, the eyelashes will have enough of a structure formed by the baking soda to allow the false eyelash to stick better. Make a habit of always doing this for your customers.

How to do it:

Clean the customer's eyelashes as usual with foam cleanser or just a non-oil based cleaning of the eyelashes, rinse the foam/cleanser away with lukewarm water, put on the eyepads. Get a small cup and add just a little water and a little baking soda (the mixture should have a grainy watery texture), then dry the customer's eyelashes with either microtops or an application brush. Let the eyelashes dry a little bit before beginning to attach the false eyelashes.

You can also prepare the mixture in a foam bottle with a non-oil based cleanser, but keep in mind that you will only be able to use it once, you won't be able to save the mixture and use it again for another customer.  You need to rinse out the bottle when you have finished, or else the mixture will solidify in the bottle. Mix about one-and-a-half teaspoon of baking soda in the bottle (50ml), make sure that the baking soda dissolves in the cleanser, then you clean up as you would normally after a foam cleansing.

If you do not want to prepare the mixture in the foam cleanser, you can mix water and baking soda in a small jar. In that case use two parts water and one half part baking soda. For example, mixing 2 ml water with 0.5 ml baking soda. Apply to the customer's eyelashes after you have put on the eyepads. Let them dry a bit and then attach the false eyelashes as usual.

Avoiding using remover

When the customer comes in for a refill you can, if there is not too much glue, remove most false eyelashes without using remover. BUT this must be done very carefully.

Find a false lash that you want to remove, jiggle it back and forth and then grab hold of the natural eyelash with one tweezer and then carefully pull away the false eyelash with the other. If it is stuck to hard for this to work you must use remover. But if the false eyelash is only attached to the bottom/root of the false eyelash, this should be a smooth way of doing it. Make sure to keep a steady grip on the natural eyelash before you pull the false one away.

Using a base

Why should you start by setting a base? If you first set a base with the desired lengths on the false eyelashes that you want to use, it simplifies the process of the adding the rest of the lashes. Set the base on both eyes so you can check that you have the same length at the same place, make sure that all lashes are on straight. Then fill it in with the remaining lashes in respective length. If you have a hard time seeing which lengths you have used, you can use our eyepads or write on the eyepads you put on the customer's lower lashes.

The right amount of glue

To ensure that an extension is attached correctly, you need to use the right amount of glue. You only need extremely little glue. Keep in mind that the glue should only be on 1cm of the false eyelash's length. If you slide in the glue ball, you should only pull the false eyelash 1mm in and then stop. If you're scooping, the same applies. No more than 1mm of the eyelash. When you then attach the eyelash, it is enough to attach it at the bottom. You absolutely do not need to cover the whole natural eyelash, instead make sure you have the right amount of glue on the false lash (there should be a small ball of glue on the false lash about the size of a pinhead) and then attach the lash to the natural eyelash either though 'push and attach' or 'stick and attach'. That way it will stick hard as a rock and will definitely not fall off.

Cleaning

We can't emphasize enough how important it is to clean the eyelashes. When the customer comes in, you start by cleaning their eyelashes with a non-oil based cleanser. Take some foam cleanser on a make-up brush and clean carefully around the eye all the way up to the eyebrow, make sure to clean between the lashes and under the eyes. If the customer is wearing make-up and foundation, it must be removed, just repeat the cleaning process until everything is gone and the foam cleanser is still white after cleaning. Clean around one eye at a time and when you have cleaned using the non-oil based cleanser, it is time to rinse the foam out. Take a small towel or bit of paper and hold it to the side of the customer's eye, approximately on a line just above the ear so that the cleanser does not run down into the customer's ear. Tilt the customer's head towards the side you are currently cleaning, for example, if you are cleaning the right eye, tilt the customer's head slightly to the right and hold the towel or bit of paper at the side of the eye, then you pour lukewarm water with a small pipe bottle onto the customers eye to remove all the cleanser. If it is still glimmering between the lashes, it means that cleanser is left and you must rinse it away with water. Dab the customer's eyelid, and under the eye with dry the paper. Repeat with the other eye.

One hint after rinsing with warm water, is to put some contact lens solution/saline on a micro brush and brushing it onto the lashes. This acts as a primer and after you have done this, the lashes are clinically clean and you can begin attaching the false lashes immediately.

Different Curlers & Materials

The various false lashes may come loose in a bag or be attached to a strip and come in a tray.

Different looks for the eyelash extension

We always adapt the eyelash extension to each individual customer. This means that we jointly agree what is best for you. There are many ways to shape an eye, and the 'look' it results in depends on the customer's wishes.

Why people want eyelash extensions varies from person to person, perhaps you want longer lashes or don't want to have to put on new make-up every day. The reasons may vary, but why you want an extension doesn't really matter. As long as you have natural eyelashes, we can extend them.

An eyelash extension can provide the following effects;

  • More open and alert look.
  • Makes your eyes appear bigger.
  • The possibility of giving the eye another shape with how the lashes are attached.
  • Fuller and longer lashes.
  • Look made-up without the need for using mascara.
  • Extended and sweeping look.

'More open/alert look'

If you apply the longest lashes to the middle of the eye and the shorter ones in the inner and outer corner of the eye, you achieve a more open look. You'll look more alert and it rounds out the eye. This method works well if you have almond shaped eyes.

"Cat-eye "

If you apply the shorter lashes in the inner corner of the eye and the longer ones in the middles and finish off with a few extra-long lashes in the outer edge you achieve an extended and sweeping look.

"Maximal enlargement"

If you set a base length and then add a few longer lashes spread out across the eye you achieve an effect of enlarging the eye. Giving you an enlarged and more open look.

Hints for using glue

  • You can wet a cotton pad and lay it on top of the gel pad on the customer's lower eyelashes, this will make the glue dry a little bit faster and it generally results in less fumes.
  • Use primer to dry out the natural eyelash a bit. This gives you a little more time to attach the false eyelash.
  • Be careful with the glue in the bottle, only take out the amount you need for each customer before you start the treatment, in that way you won't have to open the glue bottle during the treatment.
  • When you shake the glue bottle, make sure to check that there is no glue stuck in the cap. It might make it hard to open the bottle later on. You can also avoid the problem by covering the bottle with a bit of plastic wrap and shaking it without the cap on.
  • In order to avoid fumes that may result from the glue you can either blow softly on the lashes with a fan or uses a Nano mist once the treatment is complete. In that way, the customer won't smell the fumes. You can find Nano mist in the web shop!
